Johann Greve
(*2001) is a double bassist and composer from Lower Saxony. Since moving to Berlin in 2019, he has worked as a sideman on a wide variety of projects and established himself in the young Berlin jazz scene. He has performed with Percy Pursglove, Julius Gawlik, Charlotte Greve and Olga Reznichenko, among others. In March 2024, he recorded material for his debut album with his quartet.
Johann Greves compositions serve primarily as a foundation for improvisation - with the aim of always generating a strong energy in the moment and on stage.
"The name Greve no longer only enjoys a good reputation in Berlin, but also in Germany and far beyond. Bassist Johann Greve may not be following in the footsteps of his big sister Charlotte, as he has a completely different musical focus, but the intensity he finds in the first recordings of his band with saxophonist Bruno Bode, pianist Lajos Meinberg and drummer Leo Gerstner as well as well-known guests is already unparalleled. It's always about energy, the interplay of gravity and centrifugal forces, which through an indefinite mystery find a genuine unity with an incredible pull. It's not about stringing together virtuoso individual performances, but rather everyone involved pushes the expressive limit without getting in each other's way, and Greve himself forms the backbone of the whole with his powerful bass. Worth listening to would be an understatement. What Johann Greve brings to the ears here is extremely exciting and makes you want much, much more." (Translated, original in german)
